    Key Statistics on Women and Men in Hong Kong – 2016

    Hong Kong women outnumbered men in the age group of 20 to 49 that is 473,000 more women than men, according to 2016 mid-year census data included in a Hong Kong Key Statistics 2016 report (Women and Men in Hong Kong – Key Statstics 2016 Edition),  by Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department [Chart 1.1 - Population Pyramids].   

    At the same time, comparing with the 1986 and 2015 census data, the rate of never-married females has been greatly going up by 62.42% that is greater than the rate of never-married men by 13.67%. [Chart 1.2 - Never Married Persons are Increasing in Hong Kong].  

    根據2016年年中香港政府統計處的人口普查數據主要統計數字報告,香港女性人數超過男性,在20至49歲年齡組別,女性比男性多了473,000人[見圖1.1–2015年香港人口金字塔]。

    同時,1986年與2015年人口普查數據相比,從未結婚女性的升幅數字,已大大上升62.42%,遠遠大於從未結婚男性的13.67%.的升幅速度。[見圖1.2 -香港從未結婚者越來越多]。

    Survey Report on Dating Questionnaire to HKUST BBA Students

    Followed by a talk at HKUST Business School on 3 October, we have done a dating survey and a questionnaire was distributed to HKUST BBA full-time students who come from a cultural diverse background.  The age of the female students who have done the survey ranges from 18 to 22 years old; 80% of them are local Chinese and 20% are overseas Chinese. For male students, they are between 18 to 20 years old, 83% of them are Caucasian and 17% are local Chinese. 

    The survey results showed an interesting fact that the viewpoints of the female and male students are quite different.

    From male students’ perspective (Age between 18 to 20)


    General
    •        60% tend to choose a partner with lower education than them
    •       100% do not mind dating an older woman 
    •        80% do not mind a woman taller than them;
    •        60% would date ladies with a plastic surgery
    •        80% would have sex on the first date
    •         80% okay for a woman to make the first move in dating
    Bad attributes of female in Hong Kong
    •         Materialistic, princess-like (dreaming of a prince to come to them), shy, too long to get ready, jealousy, lack of empathy, impatience, etc.
    Key factor to be single
    •        Long working hours
    •        People they are interested in are already involved or not interested in them
    •        Haven’t met anyone they want to be involved
    Ways to step out of singlehood
    •        Ask help from their friends or families
    •        Use dating services and try online dating

    From female students’ perspective (Age between 18 to 22)


    General
    •         60% do not prefer to date someone with lower education than them
    •         80% do not mind dating younger man.
    •         100% do not prefer to date a man shorter than them
    •        100% would not date gentleman with a plastic surgery
    •        100% would not have sex on the first date. 
    •         80% okay for a woman to make the first move in dating
    Bad attributes of male in Hong Kong
    •      Selfishness, small-mindedness, rudeness, dishonesty, laziness, difficult to please, always dissatisfied and always complaining, ignorance, disrespect for women, controlling, possessiveness, arrogance, mummy’s boys, cheaters, indecisive, and so on
    Key factor to be single
    •        Gender ratio imbalances
    •         Long working hours
    •         People they are interested in are already involved or not interested in them
    •        Haven’t met anyone they want to be involved
    Ways to step out of singlehood

    Hong Kong women outnumbered men especially in the age group of 25 to 49 that is 201,900 more women than men, according to 2012 Census data included in a Hong Kong Key Statistics 2012 report by Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department [Chart 1.1 - Population Pyramids].    

    At the same time, comparing with the 1986 census data, the rate of never-married females has been greatly going up by 60.8% that is greater than the rate of never-married men by 15.5%. [Chart 1.2 - Never Married Persons are Increasing in Hong Kong].   

    Also, women now outnumber men on eight major college campuses in Hong Kong that is 5,000 more women than men in the past five years according to University Grants Committee's data [Chart 1.3 - Women Outnumber Men on 8 College Campuses in Hong Kong 2006-2011].

    此外,根據香港大學教育資助委員會的數據,  在過去5個學年中,  香港8間主要大學的女性大學生比男性多了大約5000 [見圖1.3 -  2006-2011年香港8間主要大學的女性大學生比男性多]

    Hong Kong (in 2006) - this figure is relatively low comparing to 32.9 milliion American singles live alone.

    Hong Kong 's workforce is Single (21.72% is female single) in 2009 -- this rate is high comparing to 42% of US's Workforce is single

    Men outnumber Women -   List of Top 50 Countries in the World in 2010

    In 229 countries, based on sex ratio calculations on the age range of 15 to 64 years old,  United Arab Emirates ranked the first that has an obvious "shortage" of women (2.75 males vs 1 female), Maldives ranked the 4th (ranked the 1st in the asian countries; 1.57 males vs 1 female) and China ranked the 16th (1.06 males vs 1 female).

    In 229 countries, based on sex ratio calculations on the age range of  15  to 64 years old, Djibouti ranked the first that has an obvious "shortage" of men (0.8 male vs 1 female), Macau ranked the 6th (ranked the 1st in the asian countries; 0.88 male vs 1 female) and Hong Kong ranked the 12th (0.94 male vs 1 female).
