More unmarried people and childless couples in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has more women, more unmarried people, and more couples without children as its population continues to age.

The results of the 2011 census also show Hong Kong's the population has reached 7,071,576, while women continue to outnumber men as the sex ratio dropped from 960 males per 1,000 females in 2001 to 876 per 1,000 last year.

Census and Statistics Commissioner Lily Ou-yang says the proportions of never married men and women in the prime
marriageable age of 20 to 49 rose from 39.3 percent and 34 percent in 2001 to 46.8 percent and 38.9 percent in 2011, respectively.

Moreover, the proportion of domestic households that comprised a couple only increased from 13.2 percent in 2001 to 15 percent last 

Ms Ou-yang says the composition of domestic households has changed along with the aging of the population and the marriage and other demographic trends.

The median age in Hong Kong rose from 36.7 in 2001 to 41.7 in 2011, and the population is expected to continue to age.
